SUMMARY:CXF Mixtape Music Series with Dawn Larsen
DESCRIPTION:The Mixtape Music series featuring Dawn Larsen: \n“For this project\, I intend to\, for the first time ever\, write songs with a specific idea in mind\, songs consciously motivated by the Ozarks. I’m a fifth generation Ozarker\, who has been gone for far too long. I had been horribly homesick\, so quit my day job\, and recently returned to my homeland. I am temporarily living with a friend while actively looking for a house within an hour of XNA. My previous original songs are based on my lived experiences as a woman raised and residing in rural America\, though not in the Ozarks. As well\, I am a mature woman concentrating on my writing at a more advanced age. In our current culture in the US\, women’s stories are marginalized. And older women are invisible. As a crone\, I believe I finally have enough life experience to write from a more wise perspective\, which makes my songs richer and more complex. And I have things to say!” \nThis event is part of the Creative Exchange Fund at the Medium.

SUMMARY:CXF Mixtape Music Series with Amos Cochran
DESCRIPTION:The Mixtape Music series featuring Amos Cochran: \n“Transmission is a new longform live performance that takes place in the black box at The Medium. Told from the perspective of an advanced AI entity traveling through the universe\, the work is structured as a broadcast—a signal of everything this being has learned as it approaches various planets. \nDrawing on my past installation N.I. (Natural Intelligence)\, which explored human interaction with AI\, this new piece is a deeper and more speculative evolution of that inquiry\, blending sound\, music\, field recordings\, and spoken word into a single transmission that contemplates love\, time\, loss\, and why we are here. \nPersonally\, Transmission feels like the most cohesive expression yet of all the sonic elements I’ve explored—tied together with a more pointed philosophical inquiry. In a world increasingly shaped by non-human systems\, this work turns inward to ask what it means to be human. I never want to prescribe how an audience should feel\, but I hope Transmission creates space for presence\, reflection\, and slowing down.” \nThis event is part of the Creative Exchange Fund at the Medium.

A movement of music and human connection\, Black LP aims to bridge divides and prevent hate. \nDeveloped in the summer of 2020 in response to the growing polarization and violence surrounding the killings of George Floyd\, Ahmaud Arbery\, and Breonna Taylor\, Black LP has traveled the country curating experiences for people across race to find common ground through music and conversation. The sharing of stories\, histories\, lived experiences\, and songs inspires Black LP participants to walk in the shoes of “the other”. To date\, 24 songs have been recorded in the project\, released on two albums\, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. \nMusic in Common is a genre-fluid trio\, blending Americana\, Soul\, and Hip-Hop into captivating performances that promote hope and unity. The show will open with the world premiere screening of the Black LP documentary film\, featuring local musicians from around the country including NWA. Integrating music\, multimedia\, storytelling\, and spoken word\, audiences journey through history with songs that have been reimagined and original works that speak to the current state of Black-White race relations in the U.S.\, highlighting the power of music as a force for human connection and social change.” \nThis event is part of the Creative Exchange Fund hosted at the Medium.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:CXF Mixtape Music Series with Derrick Mears
DESCRIPTION:CXF Mixtape Music Series featuring Derrick Mears: \n“My project is based on creative storytelling combined with songs and a visual presentation highlighting the stories presented. The focus of this project will be to reach and potentially teach individuals to consider history along with current events and how those lessons shape who we are as a humanity. \nThe songs I plan to perform are inspired by a teen fiction novel called WITNESS by the author Karen Hesse. The book is set during Prohibition in a small Vermont town while the plot of the story reflects a clergyman who attempts to infiltrate the town with the Ku Klux Klan. The text is written in prose with each character (from chapter to chapter) telling her/his point of view about the situation. \nI was transfixed by this book and compelled to write more of the story. In a sense\, short character sketches of individuals I believed needed more background or explanation or information about them. I started with one song – “Only the River Knows” and by the time I finished the entire concept album\, I ended up with 12 songs influenced by the book. I also plan to have a rolling visual presentation featuring visuals of the period.” \nMixtape Music Series is part of the Creative Exchange Fund at the Medium.

SUMMARY:CXF Mixtape Music Series with Ruby Rite
DESCRIPTION:CXF Mixtape Music Series featuring Ruby Rite: \n“Now my project blends the aggressive\, bass-heavy world of underground rap with the slow\, atmospheric textures of folk centered around beat production as the creative core. I’m stepping outside my comfort zone by building tracks that weave together trap influenced drums\, distorted 808s\, and experimental vocal chops with ambient layers\, acoustic samples\, and haunting melodies. This hybrid isn’t just a genre fusion it’s now a sound experiment pushing me to reimagine what a “beat” can be and how it can carry emotion.” \nMixtape Music Series is part of the Creative Exchange Fund at the Medium.

SUMMARY:CXF Mixtape Music Series with Sami Miller
DESCRIPTION:CXF Mixtape Music Series featuring Sami Miller: \n“Mount Comfort is a new indie-rock project based around combining multiple artistic mediums to tell stories–all focused through the music. We are currently working producing our first album\, which is a concept album centered around the fictional character of Valencia. \nThis album is comprised of a record left behind by Valencia after her death\, which is used as the eulogy at her funeral service. Performances\, therefore\, serve as a sort of funeral\, with the audience formulating the funeral attendees. This album will tell the story of her abusive relationship\, and give her the voice that she did not have in life both in the world of the story and in real life. \nI am hoping to reach an audience that understands the nature of abuse and what it does to a person\, or those who are aware of the issues but may not understand what it does to a person. This is an album comprised both of mourning and of understanding. I believe that there are perspectives and audiences\, especially locally\, that are unreached by this form of storytelling\, especially being told through the queer lens\, and that is my biggest hope with the project.” \nMixtape Music series is part of the Creative Exchange Fund at the Medium.
