DESCRIPTION:A reimagining of Alejandro Jodorowsy’s Santa Sangre – a 1989 surrealist psychological horror film described as an “odyssey through ecstasy and anguish\, belief and blasphemy\, beauty and madness” (Severin Films) and avant-garde thriller directed by Alejandro Jodorowsky in collaboration with Claudio Argenta.  Along with his brother\, Dario Argenta\, Claudio was one of the leaders of the Italian horror movement (which produced films like Suspiria) and other film makers active within the Panic Movement of the 60’s. \nThe film is set in Mexico City and tells the story of Fenix\, a boy who grew up in a circus with abusive parents\, Concha and Orgo – and childhood co-performer\, Alma.  Her name means “soul” and through the performances\, we seek to shine a light on what the film offers as a prismatic view into the resilience of the divine in feminine\, even in its most violent or victimized forms.   \nThroughout this live performance film screening\, local performing artists and circus community – along with musical guests\, Mar Lorona and Trio Las Hermanitas Alvarez – will enhance the already iconic cinematic moments. \n\n“This project is supported by the Creative Exchange Fund (CXF) at The Medium\, a program that provides artists\, creatives\, and cultural organizers with funding and free space to experiment and take bold risks. SUMMARY:CXF Mixtape Music Series with Derrick Mears
DESCRIPTION:CXF Mixtape Music Series featuring Derrick Mears: \n“My project is based on creative storytelling combined with songs and a visual presentation highlighting the stories presented. The focus of this project will be to reach and potentially teach individuals to consider history along with current events and how those lessons shape who we are as a humanity. \nThe songs I plan to perform are inspired by a teen fiction novel called WITNESS by the author Karen Hesse. The book is set during Prohibition in a small Vermont town while the plot of the story reflects a clergyman who attempts to infiltrate the town with the Ku Klux Klan. The text is written in prose with each character (from chapter to chapter) telling her/his point of view about the situation. \nI was transfixed by this book and compelled to write more of the story. In a sense\, short character sketches of individuals I believed needed more background or explanation or information about them. I started with one song – “Only the River Knows” and by the time I finished the entire concept album\, I ended up with 12 songs influenced by the book. I also plan to have a rolling visual presentation featuring visuals of the period.” \nMixtape Music Series is part of the Creative Exchange Fund at the Medium.

A movement of music and human connection\, Black LP aims to bridge divides and prevent hate. \nDeveloped in the summer of 2020 in response to the growing polarization and violence surrounding the killings of George Floyd\, Ahmaud Arbery\, and Breonna Taylor\, Black LP has traveled the country curating experiences for people across race to find common ground through music and conversation. The sharing of stories\, histories\, lived experiences\, and songs inspires Black LP participants to walk in the shoes of “the other”. To date\, 24 songs have been recorded in the project\, released on two albums\, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. \nThis proposal is for our Black LP “Songs & Stories” show\, which mixes musical performance\, spoken word\, and multimedia into a powerful presentation of the project’s journey across America and the stories shared along the way. “Songs & Stories” is impactful and engaging\, inspiring and energizing audience members to take action to help build a world in which everyone belongs. DESCRIPTION:The Mixtape Music series featuring Amos Cochran: \n“Transmission is a new longform live performance that takes place in the black box at The Medium. Told from the perspective of an advanced AI entity traveling through the universe\, the work is structured as a broadcast—a signal of everything this being has learned as it approaches various planets. \nDrawing on my past installation N.I. (Natural Intelligence)\, which explored human interaction with AI\, this new piece is a deeper and more speculative evolution of that inquiry\, blending sound\, music\, field recordings\, and spoken word into a single transmission that contemplates love\, time\, loss\, and why we are here. \nPersonally\, Transmission feels like the most cohesive expression yet of all the sonic elements I’ve explored—tied together with a more pointed philosophical inquiry. In a world increasingly shaped by non-human systems\, this work turns inward to ask what it means to be human. I never want to prescribe how an audience should feel\, but I hope Transmission creates space for presence\, reflection\, and slowing down.” \nThis event is part of the Creative Exchange Fund at the Medium.
