I want to create a “larger-than-life” art installation focused on mixed media canvases. My current mediums are chalk pastels, colored pencils, collage and spray paints. Ideally, I will create 4-5 canvases of varying dimensions and shapes (48”x48” minimum). We would create these pieces over the six week residency and save the final canvas for the opening night, as it would become an immersive experience for viewers.
Alongside my 2D art, I create music. My art reflects the themes of The Black Struggle, addiction, ambition, and overcoming obstacles. As a Black artist I often feel boxed in by the expectations of what a Black man or Black artist is. I hope to break those barriers and show people art can be used to showcase our identities and go beyond them.
NWA is such a rich community. Sometimes I feel creatives are limited by the corporate environment. I want to prove artists, especially Black artists, can thrive here and expand the narrative around what “art” is. My residency will showcase unleashed creativity while everything having its own place. I am inspired by the idea of “organized chaos” and want my viewers to sit with my art and see the order beneath it.
