How do we as individuals honor our ancestral stories, traditions, and culture? Who is responsible and who is allowed to take control of this narrative? This project would address these questions and invite the community to actively participate in the creation of a new, collective story that celebrates the diverse voices of NWA.
Using The Medium’s outdoor spaces, our project would create an immersive experience featuring a hallway of ancestral photos, an interactive space for visitors to leave pieces of their own cultural roots, and large sculptures of traditional offerings. Photo transfers printed on large fabric banners create an ethereal recognition of those who paved the way for our existence. Sculptures of common altar items would inspire visitors to reflect on their own traditions and celebrations.
A dedicated shrine would be created for visitors to leave their own offerings – these offerings could be as simple as written wishes or expand to include personal items, with suggested and prohibited items outlined on site and online.
